Summer is coming in. For some ive peoples asked me about the web site of major HK environmental consultant job opportunities, I am going to explain the major role of environmental consultant field.

Basically, environmental consultant firm is just like normal business firm, is to receive contact from either private sector (ie. Individual, manufacturing sector, energy and transportation sector-MTR/KCR) or Public sector(EPD, Civil Eng Dept. etc) or both for environmental services.
Environmental Services in HK are ranging from Noise, Air, Water, Waste, Wetland, ecology pollution/sampling project, environmental regulation assistance, Environmental GIS and Modeling, Engineering work in environmental area, project and budget planning, Green building and land planning zone up to environmental business and investment (ie. Carbon/Waste trading, Green Investment fund, Environmental Finance and Accounting).....So many area. The type of environmental services perform are depend on project nature, regulation and client(s)requirements.

Environmental consultant firm needs expert(professional) from the different backgrounds (ie. Environmental science, law, engineering, business(accounting/finance), GIS, biology and physics and so on) for one complex environmental project. Because of this, team work attitude and good communication and marketing skills would be very valuable for environmental firm. For students who are currently studying in environmental science (ive, cuhk, ouhk, cityu,hku,ust), you should develop better technical, problem solving, social, marketing and communication(both oral and writing) skills to fulfill the typical requirement of environmental consultant work. Creativity also counts.

How to build up these skills? For technical skills, during your school study, you should take more environmental related subjects (please don't take too much general subjects -ive, ouhk and city did better jobs for providing more environmental related skills and training) and take final year projects. For social, marketing and communication skills, during your school study, you should take a leadership role in any type of club and try to take different positions each year to increase your problem solving, communication and networking skills.

How to find a job in environmental consulting firm? Good Question. In this environmental field, most of entry level positions are not posting in newspapers ( most of positions are not advertised) , are though mouth to mouth. As you are student in college (ive, cuhk, ouhk, hku, cityu, ust) , you should more senior peoples(classmate, professor, vistor, environmentalist, professionals) to build up your network. Sometimes, you may need recommendation letter from them or they may have one or several environmental positions waiting someone to fill in. Therefore, if you know more and try to keep in touch as long as you can, more chance for you to get into environmental field.
